Overview

Meta Quest Pro launched on October 25, 2022 at $1,499.99. Meta aimed it at professionals and early adopters of mixed reality. Meta cut the price to $999.99 in March 2023 and has since discontinued the headset. Much of its technology moved into cheaper headsets: pancake lenses and color passthrough went to the Meta Quest 3, and its controller design influenced later Touch controllers.

Display and optics

Each eye has an 1800 × 1920 LCD panel with a mini-LED backlight split into local-dimming zones, which deepens blacks compared with a standard LCD. Pancake lenses give a 106-degree horizontal and 96-degree vertical field of view at 72 or 90 Hz. Lens spacing adjusts from 55 to 75 mm.

Comfort and design

Quest Pro weighs about 722 g. The battery sits at the back of a rigid headband, which balances the weight against the front visor. The design leaves the sides of the view open so you can see your surroundings, and magnetic light blockers are available for full immersion. Battery life is about one to two hours. A charging dock is included. Inside is a Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 1 with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage.

Tracking and controllers

Inside-out tracking is joined by color passthrough cameras for mixed reality, hand tracking and internal sensors for eye and face tracking. Supported apps use these to give avatars natural eye contact and expressions, and to run foveated rendering. The Touch Pro controllers have their own cameras and track themselves without the headset seeing them. They are rechargeable, sit in the charging dock, and also work with Quest 2 and Quest 3.

Software and apps

Quest Pro uses the same Meta Horizon Store library as other Quest headsets, plus WebXR content in the browser. It supports Quest Link and Air Link for playing PC VR from SteamVR. On PC, some apps and developers use its eye and face tracking for social VR avatars.

Who it is for

Today Quest Pro mostly interests current owners, developers who need eye and face tracking on a Quest device, and buyers of used units. Most players get better graphics per dollar from Quest 3, which has a faster chip and sharper passthrough.

Meta Quest Pro review: pioneering features, poor value

Meta Quest Pro review: pioneering features, poor value

6.0/10Decent

The Meta Quest Pro introduced pancake lenses, self-tracking controllers and eye and face tracking to Meta's lineup, and its lenses and controllers impressed critics. A dated chip, grainy passthrough, short battery life and a price reviewers called hard to justify made it a developer kit rather than a consumer headset, and the cheaper Quest 3 has since overtaken it.
