Overview
The Meta Quest 3 Open Facial Interface is an official replacement facial interface for the Meta Quest 3. It costs $39.99. Meta announced it on September 25, 2024, at the same event as Quest 3S, and launch coverage gave the price as $40. Unlike the standard interface, it leaves the sides and bottom open, so you can see your real surroundings around the edge of the view, much like the open design of the Meta Quest Pro.
Design and specs
The interface is a flexible, ventilated frame with an open periphery and a soft fabric facial pad. It is black, made of polyester, measures 160 x 106 x 98 mm and weighs 60 g. That makes it lighter than the 65 g interface that comes with Quest 3 and the 80 g Meta Quest 3 Silicone Facial Interface. Meta says the flexible frame spreads the headset's weight more evenly and adapts to your face. The box holds the facial interface and a safety and warranty guide.
Compatibility
Meta lists only Quest 3. Its FAQ says the Open Facial Interface does not work with the Meta Quest 3S, and points Quest 3S owners to the Meta Quest 3S Breathable Facial Interface. A headset fitted with the Open Facial Interface still fits in the Meta Quest 3 Carrying Case, the Carrying Case for Meta Quest 3/3S, the Compact Carrying Case for Meta Quest 3/3S and the Quest 3 Charging Dock.
Use and care
Meta's own comparison rates the Open Facial Interface best for spatial awareness, the silicone interface best for active sessions and the included interface best for everyday use. Because the sides are open, light and your room stay visible, which helps in mixed reality, fitness, training and work apps but makes fully immersive games less dark. The open design also lets heat and sweat escape. The fabric pad is removable and hand-washable, and Meta sells replacement pads in two sizes, small and large.
Who it is for
It suits Quest 3 owners who use mixed reality a lot, work out in the headset, or want to see their room, desk or keyboard while wearing it. It also helps people who find the standard interface warm. Players who want the darkest, most immersive view for games and films should keep the included interface or choose the silicone one, which Meta says blocks stray light.
