Overview
PlayStation VR2 is Sony's second-generation VR headset for the PlayStation 5. It launched on February 22, 2023 at $549.99. Sony lowered the US price to $399.99 in March 2025. It runs from the console, with no PC needed, and buys games through the PlayStation Store.
Display and optics
Each eye has a 2000 × 2040 OLED display. OLED gives deep blacks and strong contrast, which helps dark scenes. The headset supports HDR and runs at 90 Hz or 120 Hz. Sony gives a field of view of about 110 degrees. A dial adjusts the distance between the lenses. The lenses are widely reported to be Fresnel lenses, so some owners notice glare around bright objects on dark backgrounds.
Comfort and design
PS VR2 uses a halo-style band that rests on the forehead and the back of the head, which keeps pressure off the face. The visor slides forward and back, and the headset weighs roughly 560 g, not counting the cable. A single USB-C cable connects it to the PS5, so setup is simpler than the original PS VR. A small motor in the headset adds vibration feedback in supported games.
Tracking and controllers
Four cameras on the headset track both the headset and the controllers, so no external sensors are needed. The cameras also give a black-and-white see-through view for setting up the play area. One infrared camera per eye tracks eye movement. Games use this for foveated rendering, which spends GPU power where you look, and some games use gaze for menus or aiming.
The PS VR2 Sense controllers bring PS5 DualSense features into VR: adaptive triggers with variable resistance, haptic feedback and finger-touch detection.
Software and apps
The library includes Sony titles such as Horizon Call of the Mountain and the VR mode of Gran Turismo 7, plus many cross-platform VR games. Since August 2024, Sony has sold a PC adapter that lets PS VR2 play SteamVR games on a Windows PC. On PC, some features such as eye tracking, HDR and headset vibration are not available, and the adapter needs a graphics card with a DisplayPort output and a Bluetooth connection for the controllers.
Who it is for
PS VR2 suits PS5 owners who want comfortable, plug-in VR with rich OLED images and console-style exclusives. With the PC adapter, it is also an option for players who want a headset for SteamVR games, as long as they accept the cable and the features lost on PC.
