Vermillion - VR Painting is a creativity and design and learning app from Mountainborn Studios Lda that simulates oil painting on a virtual canvas. Paint mixes and blends much like the real thing, and the full set of artist's brushes comes as standard. It came to the Meta Horizon Store on March 24, 2022.

What you can do

You can jump in with paint-by-numbers packs, follow a painting tutorial from YouTube in the built-in browser, or learn from other painters online. On Quest 3 and 3S you can also photograph something in your room as a reference and turn that shot into a paint-by-numbers template.

  • Lifelike color mixing with ready-made palettes and an eyedropper.
  • A sharp, high-resolution canvas with adjustable blending.
  • Impasto, so thick paint can be shaped on the surface.
  • Layers you can reorder, plus undo and redo.
  • Paint-by-numbers outlines and palettes generated from your own pictures, with optional help to stay inside the lines.
  • A browser that can project a reference onto the canvas, and support for local image files.
  • Three virtual studios plus a mixed reality mode, and the option to frame and hang finished work in VR or in your home.
  • Quick image export and full support for the Logitech MX Ink stylus.

You can hold each brush any way you like, which helps if you have a particular grip from painting on paper.

Multiplayer

Up to four people can paint together online, and in mixed reality players in the same room can share a session. You can just as easily paint alone.

Comfort

Meta rates it as comfortable for most people. It supports sitting and standing play and uses controllers, with no hand tracking listed. Painting seated is fully supported, which makes long sessions easier.
