Action and adventure games are the big story experiences of VR. They mix exploration, physical combat, climbing and light puzzles, and they often run from a few hours to several dozen hours.

What sets them apart in a headset is presence: you swing a sword with your own arm, pull yourself up a cliff hand over hand, or lean in to look at a small diorama world from every angle. Many feature licensed characters or big-budget production from platform owners.

Things to check before buying:

• Locomotion options: smooth movement, teleport and snap turning decide how comfortable the game feels.
• Play area: most support seated, standing and room-scale play, but combat-heavy titles are easier standing.
• Headset support: some newer titles run only on recent headsets.
