Refresh rate

Также известны как Hz, refresh, display frequency

Refresh rate is how many times per second a headset's display draws a new image, measured in hertz (Hz); higher rates make motion look smoother and can improve comfort.

The refresh rate of a VR display is the number of new frames it shows each second, written in hertz (Hz). Common values in today's headsets are 72, 90 and 120 Hz, and some PC VR headsets go higher. The Valve Index, for example, offers a 144 Hz mode.

Why it matters more in VR

In VR the image must follow every small head movement. A higher refresh rate lowers the time between your movement and the updated picture, which makes the world feel more stable and solid. Many people find higher rates more comfortable, and low or uneven frame rates are a known trigger for motion sickness.

Refresh rate versus frame rate

The refresh rate is what the display can show; the frame rate is what the app or game actually renders. If the hardware cannot keep up, the headset may use reprojection to fill in missing frames, which can cause visible artifacts. Higher refresh rates also use more battery on standalone headsets and need a stronger GPU on PC, so many headsets let you pick the rate in settings, and some apps choose it themselves.
