VR StrideS is PC VR locomotion software that turns jogging in place into left-stick movement in compatible games. Developed and published by gnuj industries, it launched on Steam on November 5, 2026, after a public playtest.
The app runs alongside a PC VR game. It does not modify each game, and it does not require a treadmill, foot trackers or other extra tracking hardware. Players use their existing headset and controllers to create movement input that supported games interpret like thumbstick locomotion.
How VR StrideS converts movement
VR StrideS uses headset movement and cadence to estimate how fast the player intends to move. Headset and controller tilt and motion help determine direction. The app combines those estimates into a two-dimensional signal delivered through the VR runtime already used by the game.
The software samples headset and controller movement 90 times per second. It estimates speed and intended direction separately, allowing players to keep moving in one direction while looking somewhere else. The developer says a clear jogging rhythm produces the most reliable detection; very slow walking in place may create too little headset movement to register consistently.
The Effort setting controls how much physical movement is needed to reach a chosen in-game speed. Freedom of Movement limits permitted directions. A narrower, forward-facing range is suggested for players who drift sideways while learning. The official site also lists vertical travel figures of 125 spm and 11 cm, plus head travel figures of 136 spm and 15 cm from its demonstration material.
Game and platform compatibility
VR StrideS is intended for games with smooth or continuous stick locomotion. Teleport-only games do not provide the same stick movement for the app to drive, while games with custom input handling may behave differently.
The developer lists VRChat, Blade & Sorcery, Half-Life: Alyx, BONELAB and BONEWORKS as working. Half-Life: Alyx is set to continuous movement. Skyrim VR, No Man's Sky, Pavlov, Phasmophobia and Fallout 4 VR remain in testing. Beat Saber, Gorilla Tag and VTOL VR are not supported because they lack stick movement for this approach.
Quest 3 connected to a PC is the primary tuning target. Quest 3S and Quest Pro are supported. Quest 2, PlayStation VR2 with its PC adapter and other tethered PC VR headsets remain in testing, so listed compatibility is not a guarantee for every headset or connection.
The official website lists SteamVR and a native OpenXR path. Steam's system requirements say SteamVR must be installed and running and describe VR StrideS as a SteamVR driver. Virtual Desktop, Steam Link and ALVR are supported connection methods. Meta Link, Air Link and direct cable connections remain in testing.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 are supported. The Linux build remains in testing after reports of launch and connection problems. Buyers using the native OpenXR route should check current setup guidance, because Steam's requirements specifically name SteamVR.
Quest tutorial and practical limits
The standalone Quest tutorial teaches the movement inside its own tutorial. It does not add the feature to other games running directly on a standalone Quest. Compatible PC VR games require the PC companion app and a linked headset.
Jogging in place requires enough clear physical space. The standalone tutorial advises short sessions and stopping if the player feels unwell. The app therefore offers a treadmill-free and tracker-free option, but its usefulness depends on the headset, runtime, connection method and each game's locomotion system.
VR StrideS normally costs €10.25 on Steam. An introductory offer reduces the price to €9.22 through November 12. The Steam listing requires agreement to a third-party EULA.
