The rhythm game that defined VR: slice flying blocks to the beat with two sabers, dodge walls, and build a library from 60+ base songs plus music packs.

Beat Saber is a VR rhythm game from Prague studio Beat Games. You hold a red and a blue saber and cut colored blocks in the direction their arrows point, in time with the music, while ducking and sidestepping walls and avoiding bombs. It entered Steam Early Access in May 2018 and reached its full release on SteamVR and the original Quest in May 2019.

How it plays

Each song has several difficulty levels, from relaxed Easy charts to fast Expert+ patterns that are a real workout. Scoring rewards full, well-angled swings, so good technique matters as much as speed. Modifiers can make songs faster, slower, or remove walls.

Modes and music

  • Solo play for any song, with leaderboards.
  • Campaign with set challenges.
  • Party mode for passing one headset around a room.
  • Online multiplayer for up to five players on Quest and PC.

The base game includes more than 60 songs, and the wider library passes 300 tracks through paid music packs and single songs, from artists such as Coldplay, Metallica and Lady Gaga to Monstercat mixtapes. Beat Games keeps adding new packs, and the Steam page teases a large update for spring 2027.

Comfort

Beat Saber has no artificial movement: you stand in place and the blocks come to you. That makes it one of the most comfortable VR games for people prone to motion sickness, though harder levels are physically demanding.

Platforms and what to know before buying

The game is sold on the Meta Horizon Store for Quest 3, Quest 3S and other Quest headsets, and on SteamVR for PC headsets. The base game costs $19.99 on both, and music packs are sold separately.

A version for PlayStation VR and PlayStation VR2 is still sold on the PlayStation Store, but Beat Games stopped adding new content there in June 2025 and shut down PlayStation multiplayer in January 2026. For the newest songs and features, Quest or PC is the better choice.
