Overview
Galaxy XR is Samsung's high-end mixed reality headset and the first headset to ship with Google's Android XR platform. Samsung built it with Google and Qualcomm. It launched in the United States on October 21, 2025 at $1,799.99, in one configuration with 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. It is mainly a device for media, browsing, multitasking and Google apps, with games as one part of the mix.
Display and optics
Each eye has a 3552 × 3840 micro-OLED panel, about 29 million pixels across both eyes. Samsung lists a 109-degree horizontal and 100-degree vertical field of view through pancake lenses. The display runs at 60, 72 or 90 Hz, with 72 Hz as the default. Lens spacing covers IPDs from 54 to 70 mm. Glasses wearers can buy optical inserts separately.
Comfort and design
The headset weighs 545 g with its forehead cushion. The battery is a separate 302 g pack on a cable, which keeps that weight off the head. Samsung rates it for up to two hours of general use or 2.5 hours of video, and the headset can run while the pack charges. A detachable light shield blocks outside light when you want full immersion. Without it, you can keep some awareness of the room.
Tracking and controllers
Inside-out tracking uses world-facing cameras, a depth sensor and several motion sensors. Two high-resolution cameras give a color passthrough view for mixed reality. Four internal cameras handle eye tracking, and hand tracking is the default way to control the interface: you look at an item and pinch to select it. Galaxy XR Controllers with thumbsticks, triggers and face buttons are sold separately for about $250. They are useful for games built around controllers.
Software and apps
The headset runs on a Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2. Apps come from Google Play. Besides apps built for XR, many standard Android phone and tablet apps run in floating windows. Gemini is built into the system and can answer questions about what you see and help with tasks. Google apps such as YouTube, Maps and Chrome have spatial versions, and the browser supports WebXR content.
Who it is for
Galaxy XR suits people who live in the Google and Samsung ecosystem and want a sharp personal screen for video, work and browsing, with mixed reality and Gemini on top. Players focused on games should note that the controllers cost extra and the native XR game library is smaller than on longer-running platforms.
