Halfbrick's VR take on its mobile hit: hold a blade in each hand and slice flying fruit while dodging bombs in Classic, Arcade and Zen modes, on Quest, Steam, PICO and PS VR.
Fruit Ninja VR is an arcade action game from Halfbrick Studios, the Australian studio that made the original Fruit Ninja for phones in 2010. It entered Steam Early Access for HTC Vive in July 2016 and fully released on SteamVR on December 15, 2016, followed by PlayStation VR on December 20, 2016. It came to Quest on May 21, 2019, where it is listed simply as Fruit Ninja, and it is also sold on the PICO Store. Halfbrick released a separate sequel, Fruit Ninja VR 2, in 2023.
How it plays
Fruit is thrown up in front of you, and you slice it with a sword in each hand. Besides plain slicing, you can juggle fruit, skewer it on your blade and swat bombs away. The core modes from the mobile game return: Classic, where you slice fruit and avoid bombs, the score-chasing Arcade mode and the relaxed Zen mode. The PlayStation VR version adds a Survival mode against fruit-firing helicopters. Global leaderboards track the best combos and scores.
It is a short-session game built around score chasing, which makes it an easy first game for people new to VR.
Comfort
Meta rates it comfortable. You stay in one place and only swing your arms, so there is no artificial movement. It can be played standing or seated with motion controllers, although swinging freely is easier when standing.
What to know before buying
- It costs $14.99 on the Meta Horizon Store, Steam and the PlayStation Store. On Meta's store, buying it once covers both Quest and Rift.
- On Quest it runs on Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S and Quest Pro.
- The PlayStation version is a PS4 game for the original PS VR and needs the PlayStation Camera and PS Move controllers. It does not support PS VR2.
- It is single-player and rated PEGI 3 (ESRB Everyone).
