Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge review: a fan trip to Batuu, best with Last Call

An AI-written assessment of Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge from official game details and published reviews: authentic Star Wars atmosphere, memorable side tales, broad comfort options and a much-improved PS VR2 Enhanced Edition; but basic corridor shooting, weak enemy AI, a short base game and blurry Quest visuals.

総評

Tales from the Galaxy's Edge captures Star Wars well and has a few standout moments, but its shooting is basic and the base game is short. It is best bought with Last Call on Quest or as the PS VR2 Enhanced Edition, which bundles both parts with much better visuals.

This review is an AI-written assessment. It is based on official game details and on what published reviews broadly agree on, not on hands-on play.

What it is

Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge is a single-player action-adventure set on the planet Batuu, home of Disney's Galaxy's Edge theme park land. It was developed by ILMxLAB and published by Disney. It first launched on November 19, 2020 for the original Quest and is playable on Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3 and Quest 3S via the Meta Horizon Store. A paid expansion, Last Call, followed in September 2021. On February 22, 2023 an Enhanced Edition that bundles both parts launched for PlayStation VR2 on the PlayStation Store, where Sony's page now lists it at $39.99. MIXED listed the Quest base game at $24.99, with Last Call at $9.99.

You play a droid repair technician who crash-lands on Batuu and takes on missions against the Guavian Death Gang and the First Order. The bartender Seezelslak tells side stories that let you play other roles, including a Jedi segment and an IG-88 assassin droid mission. UploadVR put the base campaign at three to four hours. MIXED counted seven to eight hours of campaign with Last Call, plus a few hours of challenges. Road to VR reported that it ranked 36th on Meta's 2025 list of the 50 best-selling Quest games of all time.

Strengths

  • Star Wars atmosphere. MIXED called it "as Star Wars as it gets," with detailed environments and animated characters. UploadVR agreed that it sells the setting well.
  • Standout moments. UploadVR singled out a short Jedi training tale with Yoda as "thrilling." Android Central gave Last Call 4.5 out of 5, calling it a big upgrade on Part One.
  • PS VR2 Enhanced Edition. MIXED called it the best version, citing much higher resolution, dynamic lighting, eye tracking with foveated rendering and better haptics.
  • Comfort options. UploadVR praised the "sheer breadth of comfort settings," including teleport or free movement, snap or smooth turning, a field-of-view dimmer and seated play.

Weaknesses

  • Basic shooting. UploadVR called the core game "just a linear corridor shooter" with enemies that "just sort of stand there." It also found the inventory fiddly and the grab range "extremely tiny."
  • Short base game. At three to four hours, UploadVR felt it was like a preview for a larger game. Wikipedia's summary also notes critics disliked its short length, and Destructoid gave it 6/10.
  • Fragmented story. MIXED found the structure "fragmented," jumping between places and roles, with a story that feels "a bit rushed."
  • Quest visuals. MIXED noted "blurred textures and flat backgrounds" on Quest compared to PS VR2.
  • Uneven tales. MIXED called the IG-88 mission a "simple rail shooter."

Who it suits

It suits Star Wars fans who want to visit Batuu, meet familiar characters and handle blasters and lightsabers in a short, accessible adventure. Newcomers to VR get a gentle start thanks to teleport movement and extensive comfort settings. PS VR2 owners get the best version, with both parts in one package. On Quest, buying Last Call roughly doubles the campaign and fixes much of the complaint about length. Players looking for deep shooting or strong enemy AI will find it thin.

How it compares

Against Batman: Arkham Shadow, another licensed adventure, it is far shorter and simpler, with less varied combat, but easier on newcomers. Against Alien: Rogue Incursion, it is lighter in tone, less tense and less demanding, with more variety across its side tales but weaker gunplay. Wikipedia lists an OpenCritic score of 74. UploadVR gave the original 3 out of 5, while MIXED's later review of the full package and Android Central's Last Call review were clearly positive. The broad agreement is that it is a strong fan experience with simple combat, and that it is best bought with Last Call or as the PS VR2 Enhanced Edition.
