Red Matter 2 is a puzzle adventure from Madrid studio Vertical Robot. It launched on August 18, 2022, on Quest 2, Rift and SteamVR, and on PlayStation VR2 in May 2023. It follows the first Red Matter, though new players can start here.
How it plays
You play as Sasha, an agent sent to recover secrets in a series of abandoned research facilities. Your hands hold multi-purpose tools: one scans and translates text, another grabs and manipulates objects, and others hack and fire. Puzzles involve examining the environment, decoding documents, restoring power and solving mechanisms. Compared with the first game, Red Matter 2 adds a low-gravity jetpack, more action and light combat.
The campaign takes about six hours, and the tone is tense and atmospheric rather than scary; the store page notes that it has no jump scares.
Visuals
Red Matter 2 is widely cited for its detailed graphics on standalone headsets. The PC version adds higher-resolution textures and dynamic shadows, and the PS VR2 version runs at 120 frames per second with eye-tracked foveated rendering.
Comfort
Meta rates the game as comfortable. It offers smooth movement, teleport and snap-turn options, and can be played seated, standing or in room scale.
