POPULATION: ONE is a free-to-play battle royale shooter from BigBox VR, a Seattle studio owned by Meta since 2021. It launched on October 22, 2020, on Quest, Rift and SteamVR, and it has been free on the Meta Horizon Store since March 9, 2023.

How it plays

Teams of three, called squads, drop onto a large map, collect weapons and gear, and fight to be the last squad standing. What sets it apart is its vertical combat system: you can climb any wall, rock or building, glide across the map, and quickly build walls and ramps for cover. Other modes include Legions with six-player squads and Team Deathmatch, alongside rotating limited-time modes. Sandbox lets players build custom games with their own maps and rules, and the community has made more than 1,000 maps. A single-player mode against bots arrived with the free-to-play update, and seasonal updates have added content such as the large Metropolis map.

Comfort

Meta rates it moderate. Climbing, gliding and fast firefights involve a lot of artificial movement, which can be hard on players who are new to VR. It can be played seated, standing or in room scale.

What to know before buying

  • It is free on Quest and earns money from cosmetics and its in-game currency, Bureau Gold. When it went free on Quest, the Steam and Rift versions stayed paid at $19.99 with 1,200 Bureau Gold included, which BigBox VR said was meant to deter cheaters.
  • Crossplay connects Quest, Rift and Steam players.
  • It runs on Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S and Quest Pro. Support for the original Quest ended in 2022. There is no PS VR2 or PICO version.
  • It needs an internet connection and uses motion controllers. The ESRB rates it Teen.
  • Text is available in English, French, German, Japanese, Korean and Spanish.
