Metro Awakening is a survival horror shooter from Vertigo Games, released on November 7, 2024, for Quest, SteamVR, PlayStation VR2 and Viveport at the same time. It is the first Metro game made for VR.

Story

The game is a prequel to Metro 2033, set in the tunnels beneath a post-apocalyptic Moscow, and it was written by series creator Dmitry Glukhovsky. You play Serdar, a doctor searching for medicine for his wife, whose journey takes him through dangerous stations and into stranger territory.

How it plays

Metro Awakening follows the series' slow, tense style. Ammunition and filters are scarce, so you scavenge, craft and decide when to fight or sneak. Many tasks are physical: you wind up a flashlight to recharge it, wipe your gas mask, swap filters and reload weapons by hand. Enemies include mutants and human factions, and dark, cramped spaces build a strong sense of dread.

Comfort

Meta lists the game as comfortable, and it offers smooth movement, teleport and turning options. It can be played seated, standing or in room scale. The horror themes, darkness and creatures may be too intense for some players. Vertigo also promised an arachnophobia mode as a post-launch update.

What to know before buying

  • The standard edition lists for $29.99 on the Meta Horizon Store, Steam and the PlayStation Store, down from its $39.99 launch price.
  • A Deluxe Edition adds a cosmetic pack and a VR concept art gallery.
  • On Quest it runs on Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S and Quest Pro.
  • It is single-player, uses controllers, and is rated PEGI 16 for horror, violence and strong language. Voice acting is in English, with text in 11 languages.
