Cubism

A calm, minimalist puzzle game: fit colorful blocks into 3D shapes across 90 puzzles, with hand tracking and a mixed reality mode.

Cubism is a minimalist puzzle game by independent developer Thomas Van Bouwel, released on September 17, 2020, on Quest, Rift and SteamVR. It has since built a strong following as one of the most relaxing puzzle games in VR, and passed 100,000 sales on Quest.

How it plays

Each puzzle shows a wireframe shape floating in front of you and a set of colored pieces made of cubes. Your job is to grab, rotate and fit the pieces together so they fill the shape exactly. Early puzzles are simple, while later ones demand careful spatial thinking about how pieces interlock.

  • 90 puzzles across two campaigns.
  • A local puzzle editor for building your own challenges.
  • Light and dark visual modes and a calm ambient soundtrack.

Hand tracking and mixed reality

Cubism is well known for its hand tracking support, which lets you pick up pieces with your bare hands. A 2023 update added a mixed reality mode on Quest 3, so the puzzle can float over your real table. Passthrough also works on PICO, the Samsung Galaxy XR, and Valve's Steam Frame, where a native standalone build is marked Steam Frame Verified.

Comfort

There is no movement at all, and Meta rates it comfortable. It works seated, standing or in room scale, which makes it a good choice for short sessions and for players new to VR.

Platforms and what to know before buying

  • It costs $9.99 on the Meta Horizon Store, SteamVR and the PICO Store.
  • On Meta's store, one purchase covers both Quest and Rift (cross-buy).
  • It was also a launch title on Android XR for the Galaxy XR.
  • A fifth-anniversary update in September 2025 added new music and five more languages on Quest.
