Free social platform where millions meet as custom avatars in user-built worlds, with cross-play between PC VR, Quest, PICO and phones.
VRChat is a free social platform from VRChat Inc. It entered Steam Early Access in February 2017 and is still labeled Early Access on Steam today, even though it is one of the largest and longest-running social VR communities.
What it is
Almost everything in VRChat is made by its users. Creators build worlds and avatars with the VRChat SDK in Unity and script interactive content with the Udon system. As a result, the platform covers everything from quiet hangouts and clubs with live DJs to games, art galleries, role-play communities and education spaces.
You appear as an avatar of your choice, talk by voice, and use head and hand tracking for body language. On PC, VRChat supports full-body tracking and finger tracking with compatible hardware.
Platforms and cross-play
VRChat is free on SteamVR, the Meta Horizon Store, the PICO Store and Viveport. Flat-screen versions for Android and iOS reached full release in October 2025, and players on all devices can meet in the same worlds. Not every avatar or world is available on standalone headsets and phones, because content must be optimized for those devices.
Money
The app is free. VRChat earns money through the VRChat Plus subscription and an avatar marketplace where creators sell content.
Comfort and safety
Meta rates VRChat as intense, since experiences vary widely and many worlds use smooth movement. You can play seated or standing with controllers, hand tracking on Quest, or a gamepad. Because it is an open social space, it offers trust and safety settings, blocking and muting, and requires a VRChat account. Meta and PICO show a 12+ rating.
Scale
The platform set a concurrent-user record of about 156,700 in February 2026.
