ChilloutVR is a free social sandbox for PC VR and desktop, and part of the Social category. It entered Steam Early Access on February 8, 2021, and is still in Early Access today. Steam credits the ChilloutVR Team as developer and Disconeering LLC as publisher, and the official terms say the platform is developed and operated by a company based in Germany.
What it does
Like VRChat, ChilloutVR is built around content made by its community. Creators upload avatars and worlds, players hop between them, and the platform adds friends, groups and events on top. You can join with a VR headset or on a flat screen with mouse and keyboard, and the VR version supports tracked controllers and full-body tracking.
Social and safety
ChilloutVR is an open multiplayer space, so you will meet strangers. Users must be at least 13, and adult-only or explicit content is limited to users aged 18 or older. Steam marks the game with mature content descriptors because user-made avatars, worlds and game modes may include nudity, sexual content, violence or gore. Content is tagged in the game, with separate nudity and suggestive tags that you can filter, and access to mature content is handled through a separate Steam DLC.
Comfort
Because worlds and game modes are made by users, comfort depends on where you go. Steam does not show a comfort rating, and the desktop mode is an alternative for anyone who prefers a flat screen.
Platforms and what to know before buying
- It is free on Steam for SteamVR headsets, and the developers state it will always be free to play.
- Free accounts can upload up to ten avatars or worlds and cannot create groups; a paid account unlock removes these limits.
- It runs on Windows PCs, so a standalone headset such as the Meta Quest 3 has to connect to a PC to play.
- The minimum PC is Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit), a quad-core Core i5 or Ryzen 5, 8 GB of RAM and a GeForce GTX 1060 or Radeon RX 580; 16 GB of RAM and a GTX 1080 or RX 5700 XT are recommended, plus extra storage for downloaded content.
