Valve Code Points to an OLED Steam Frame With 3,552 × 3,840 Per-Eye Panels

References to a Steam Frame display codenamed 'Plano' in Valve's public kernel source suggest the company has tested a much higher-resolution panel, though Valve has not announced or commented on any new model.

Valve Code Points to an OLED Steam Frame With 3,552 × 3,840 Per-Eye Panels

Valve's publicly released Linux kernel source for the Steam Frame describes a display codenamed "Plano" with 3,552 × 3,840 pixels per eye, according to Road to VR, which credits the find to the fan site Steam Frame Hub. A closer read of the driver by VR.org shows the panel is still at an early stage, and Valve has not commented.

What the code shows

  • Resolution: 3,552 × 3,840 per eye, compared with 2,160 × 2,160 LCD panels in the Steam Frame on sale today.
  • Working mode: the only mode switched on sends 1,776 × 1,920 per eye, which a chip on the panel scales up two times in each direction.
  • Refresh rate: 72, 80 or 90Hz in that mode. Entries for 100-120Hz are marked as test-only and not working.
  • Chip: the device files target the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 used in the current headset.

VR.org reports that a full-resolution mode is listed but requires overclocking the display link, and that several foveated transport modes, which would send full detail only where the eye is looking, are marked as work in progress. Road to VR says activity on the repository continued until October 2, weeks after Steam Frame orders opened on September 14.

Why people think it is OLED

The word "OLED" does not appear in the Plano driver itself. VR.org traces the label to a separate December 2025 commit titled "create new deckard-panel for oled display," which uses the same 1,776 × 1,920 mode. The 3,552 × 3,840 figure also matches the per-eye resolution of the micro-OLED panels in Samsung Galaxy XR.

What it means for buyers

Road to VR compares the find to Steam Deck, which got an OLED model about 21 months after the LCD version, but warns the code could just as easily be an abandoned experiment or internal testing. The Steam Frame's own codename, Deckard, surfaced in code back in 2021, years before launch. VR.org says Steam Frame Hub's own guess for any Plano product is late 2027 at the earliest. With current Steam Frame backorders already stretching into 2027, nothing here suggests holding off on an existing $1,059 order.
