Overview

The MeganeX superlight 8K is an ultralight PC VR headset from Shiftall, developed with the Panasonic Group. Preorders opened on October 10, 2024, at $1,899, and shipments began in early 2025. The "8K" name refers to the combined resolution of both displays. In October 2025, Shiftall announced the MeganeX 8K Mark II as its successor. It keeps the same displays, lenses and 179 g weight, and Shiftall's store now sells only the Mark II.

Display and optics

Each eye has a 1.35-inch micro-OLED panel with 3552 × 3840 pixels, 10-bit color and 95 percent DCI-P3 coverage. The panels run at 90 Hz only. HDR works in supported SteamVR apps with Nvidia RTX graphics cards. The pancake lenses were designed by the Panasonic Group. Lens spacing is motorized from 58 to 72 mm. A focus dial adjusts from 0 to −7 diopters, so many nearsighted users need no glasses. The headset cannot be worn over glasses, but magnetic prescription inserts are available. Shiftall does not publish field-of-view figures.

Comfort and design

The main body weighs 179 g. Shiftall first announced it as under 185 g. A forehead pad and a thin head strap carry the weight, and a soft light shade touches the face with almost no pressure, so it stays comfortable even lying down. The headset flips up to give a direct view of the room, and a handheld adapter lets people use it without the strap. There are two microphones but no speakers. A USB-C port takes earphones or other accessories. A converter box links the headset to the PC over DisplayPort and USB.

Tracking and controllers

Head tracking uses SteamVR base stations 1.0 or 2.0, ideally two. There is no inside-out tracking, no camera passthrough, and no eye or hand tracking. Controllers are not included. It works with SteamVR controllers such as Shiftall's FlipVR, the Valve Index controllers or Vive controllers, and a dongle for two controllers is in the box.

Software and apps

The headset runs SteamVR games on Windows, and OpenXR apps work through SteamVR. It needs an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 or faster. Shiftall says it does not work with AMD Radeon GPUs.

Who it is for

The superlight 8K was made for people who spend hours in social VR apps such as VRChat and already own base stations. Like the Bigscreen Beyond 2, it is extremely light, but it needs no face scan and adds motorized lens spacing and focus adjustment. New buyers will find the MeganeX 8K Mark II in its place.

Shiftall MeganeX superlight 8K review: the sharpest light PC VR headset, with caveats

7.0/10Very good

The MeganeX superlight 8K pairs some of the sharpest micro-OLED panels in PC VR with a light, adjustable flip-up design that reviewers found comfortable for long sessions. Its NVIDIA-only support, modest field of view, missing audio and the cost of base stations on top of $1,899 make it a niche pick for committed SteamVR enthusiasts.
