von Owlchemy Labs

A comedy sandbox set in 2050, where robots run a museum of human jobs and you clumsily work as an office worker, chef, store clerk and mechanic.

Job Simulator is a comedy simulation game from Owlchemy Labs. It launched on April 5, 2016, alongside the HTC Vive on Steam, and became one of the first big hits of modern VR. Ten years later it is still sold on almost every major VR platform.

What it is

The premise: in the year 2050, robots have replaced human workers, and they built a "job simulator" so people can learn what it was like to work. A floating computer monitor guides you through four jobs:

  • Office worker, with paperwork, phone calls and a coffee machine.
  • Gourmet chef, cooking orders for robot customers.
  • Store clerk at a convenience store.
  • Auto mechanic in a garage.

Each job gives you tasks, but the fun lies in ignoring them: nearly everything can be picked up, combined, thrown or broken, and the game reacts with jokes. A free update added Infinite Overtime, a never-ending night shift with randomly generated tasks.

Comfort

You stand at a small workstation and everything is within reach, so there is no artificial movement. Meta rates it comfortable, and it is often recommended as a first VR game for all ages. It works with controllers and, on Quest and Apple Vision Pro, with hand tracking.

Platforms

Job Simulator costs $19.99 on every store: the Meta Horizon Store, SteamVR, the PlayStation Store (one purchase includes PS VR and PS VR2 versions), the PICO Store, the visionOS App Store and Android XR, where it was a launch title for the Samsung Galaxy XR.

What to know before buying

It is a single-player game. The Steam version includes a spectator mode and Twitch integration for streamers. It is rated PEGI 3. If you enjoy it, Owlchemy's Vacation Simulator follows the same style with a larger world.
