The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners review: brutal melee and real choices in a flooded New Orleans

An AI-written assessment of The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners from official details and published reviews: physical, brutal melee combat, meaningful choices, deep crafting and plenty of content including the free Aftershocks expansion, offset by weak human AI, fiddly inventory and stamina systems, punishing saves and intense gore.

评测结论

Saints & Sinners pairs some of the best melee combat in VR with real choices and a substantial survival campaign, and it remains one of the platform's standout long-form games. Erratic human AI, fiddly inventory management and a punishing save system keep it short of perfect.

This review is an AI-written assessment. It is based on official game details and on what published reviews broadly agree on, not on hands-on play.

What it is

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners is a first-person survival game from Skydance Interactive, made with Skybound Entertainment. You play the Tourist, a survivor scavenging a flooded, walker-infested New Orleans. From a hideout you head out to scavenge, craft weapons and supplies, take on jobs for rival factions and make choices about who lives and who dies. Combat is physics-based: you grab walkers and drive blades into their skulls with your own hands, and every move costs stamina.

It launched on PC VR in January 2020, then came to PlayStation VR in May 2020, Quest in October 2020 and Pico 4 in January 2023. A PS VR2 version followed in March 2023, with a $10 upgrade for PS4 owners that was free for Tourist Edition buyers, UploadVR reported. A free expansion, Aftershocks, added four to six hours of missions in September 2021, and a Quest 3 update in January 2024 brought higher environmental detail, dynamic flashlight shadows and more walkers on screen. It is available on the Meta Horizon Store, SteamVR, the PICO Store and the PlayStation Store.

It has been one of VR's biggest hits. Road to VR reported in January 2024 that the franchise had made nearly $100 million. A sequel, Chapter 2: Retribution, followed in December 2022.

Strengths

  • Melee combat. This is what reviewers praise most. UploadVR, which rated it Essential, described a "lethally on-point melee system" and an industry-best blend of physics. Road to VR, which scored it 9 out of 10, found the zombie combat deliberately unpleasant in a way that makes it feel real.
  • Choices that matter. Road to VR said there are no easy answers when deciding who lives and dies, and UploadVR praised the rare sense of player agency. UploadVR found that choices genuinely shape relationships and outcomes.
  • Survival systems with depth. UploadVR felt the crafting and progression rival flatscreen survival games. Small physical actions, such as bandaging a wound by hand, add to the immersion.
  • Atmosphere and sound. Road to VR singled out the sound design, and Destructoid called it "not a tech demo" but a full game.
  • Plenty to do. Road to VR took about 11 hours to finish the story and Destructoid about 15, before Aftershocks and the Meatgrinder mode. Metacritic lists a score of 81 from 28 PC reviews.

Weaknesses

  • Weak human AI. UploadVR found human enemies erratic and the cast of characters thin, with brief interactions that limit the emotional payoff.
  • Fiddly survival chores. Destructoid, which gave it 7.5 out of 10, found inventory management tedious in VR. UploadVR felt the stamina meter was unnecessary.
  • Punishing saves. Road to VR found the save system frustrating on long levels and the world itself fairly constrained.
  • Story peaks early. UploadVR noted the campaign ends just as your gear and weapons reach their best.
  • Intense and gory. Close-up stabbing and dismemberment are the point, and free movement through dark, crowded streets is not for everyone.

Who it suits

Saints & Sinners suits adults who want a substantial single-player survival game with tense, physical melee combat and moral choices. It is one of the better long-form games for Meta Quest 3 owners, who get the enhanced version. Comfort options include snap turning, smooth locomotion, field-of-view blinders and seated play, which Road to VR rated 8.5 out of 10 for comfort. Players new to smooth movement may still want to read our guide on how to reduce motion sickness in VR first.

How it compares

Arizona Sunshine 2 is the more action-focused zombie game, built around gunplay and co-op, while Saints & Sinners leans harder on scavenging, crafting and close-quarters melee. Half-Life: Alyx offers similar physical interaction in a more polished, linear story, but it is PC VR only. Within the series, Road to VR noted that Chapter 2 was widely criticised for adding little that was new, so the original remains the place to start.
