ALVR

ALVR is a free, open-source productivity utility from ALVR Team that lets you play PC VR games on a Quest headset without a cable. The project is maintained by its community rather than a commercial studio. It has been on the Meta Horizon Store since July 6, 2024.

What you can do

The app in the headset is only one half of the setup. You also need the ALVR streamer program on your PC, which the developers distribute through the project's GitHub releases page. Once both sides are running, your computer renders the game and ALVR sends the picture to the headset over your home network.

• Wireless streaming of PC VR games to Quest.
• Requires the separate ALVR streamer app on a PC.
• Open-source code, maintained by volunteers.
• Help and development discussion on the project's Discord server.

The store listing is brief. It does not list PC hardware requirements, router recommendations or which games have been tested, so plan to read the project's own documentation before you start. Results depend heavily on your PC and Wi-Fi setup.

Comfort

ALVR supports sitting, standing and room-scale use, with controllers or hand tracking. How comfortable a session feels comes down to the PC game you stream and any lag on your network; if you are prone to motion sickness in VR, start with short sessions.
