About Unity

Unity was founded in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2004 by David Helgason, Nicholas Francis and Joachim Ante. The company, Unity Software Inc., is headquartered in San Francisco, California, and its shares trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker U. Its best-known product is the Unity engine and editor, a real-time 2D and 3D tool that publishes to more than 20 platforms. The current release line is Unity 6. Unity reports two business segments: Create Solutions, which covers the engine and related cloud services, and Grow Solutions, which covers advertising and monetization products such as the Unity Ad Network and the Vector AI system behind its user acquisition tools.

Unity in VR and XR

Unity lists Meta Quest, PlayStation VR2, Android XR, Apple visionOS and other OpenXR headsets among the XR platforms it supports. Its main XR tools are:

• OpenXR Plug-in: Unity's support for the Khronos OpenXR standard, covering Meta Quest through a Meta Quest Support feature, plus runtimes such as SteamVR, Windows Mixed Reality and Magic Leap 2.
• visionOS and PolySpatial: Unity builds windowed, fully immersive VR and mixed reality apps for Apple Vision Pro. Mixed reality apps use the PolySpatial packages, and the two immersive modes require a Unity Pro, Enterprise or Industry plan.
• AR Foundation: a framework for multi-platform AR apps, with provider plug-ins for ARCore, ARKit, visionOS, HoloLens 2 and Meta Quest, where it handles passthrough, plane detection and anchors.
• XR Interaction Toolkit: a component-based interaction system for VR and AR, covering object interaction, UI and locomotion.

VR games made with Unity include Beat Saber, Job Simulator by Owlchemy Labs, Synth Riders (launched on SteamVR and Meta Quest in 2019 and later ported to Apple Vision Pro) and the 5v5 shooter Breachers.
