Microsoft

The Redmond-based maker of Windows and Xbox, which built the HoloLens headsets and Windows Mixed Reality and now brings Xbox games and controllers to Meta Quest.

About Microsoft

Microsoft was founded on April 4, 1975 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, by Bill Gates and Paul Allen to sell BASIC interpreters for the Altair 8800. It is headquartered in Redmond, Washington. The company is best known for the Windows operating system, the Office and Microsoft 365 productivity apps, the Azure cloud platform and the Xbox games brand, which includes consoles, controllers, Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Products

Microsoft's own headset line was HoloLens. The HoloLens Development Edition shipped on March 30, 2016 at $3,000, and HoloLens 2 was announced on February 24, 2019 at $3,500. In October 2024 Microsoft confirmed it had ended HoloLens 2 production, with security fixes running until the end of 2027. From October 2017 it also ran Windows Mixed Reality, a PC VR platform for headsets made by partners; it announced on December 21, 2023 that the platform was deprecated, and it was removed in Windows 11 version 24H2. On Meta Quest, the Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) app arrived in December 2023. Meta sells the Xbox Wireless Controller for Quest, and in June 2025 Meta and Xbox launched the limited Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition with a matching Xbox controller.
