Sony Begins Moving XR Headset Patents to Meta in a Reported 419-Patent Deal

Sony has quietly begun handing a large batch of its VR and AR patents to Meta. The transfer was first spotted by ZDNet Korea in US patent assignment records and reported in English by Road to VR on October 7, 2026, with further coverage from outlets including Shacknews.

What the records show

  • 43 US patents were recorded as transferred from Sony to Meta between June and September 2026.
  • They stem from a confirmatory assignment agreement signed in December 2025.
  • The full deal is reported to cover 419 patents worldwide: 180 in the US and 239 filed in Japan, China, Korea, Europe and other regions. The 43 recorded so far are a subset of the US group.
  • Sony filed the patents between 2010 and 2022. They cover head-mounted displays, several types of XR glasses and information processing for XR applications.

Neither Sony nor Meta has made a public statement about the deal, its price or its purpose.

Is PlayStation VR finished?

Many observers read the sale as a sign that Sony is scaling back its XR hardware plans. That remains an interpretation, not a stated strategy. The records name Sony Group Corporation rather than its PlayStation business specifically, and patent sales alone do not prove an end to VR development. Sony also still sells an enterprise mixed reality headset made with Siemens.

The context is hard to ignore, though. The PlayStation VR2 launched in February 2023 at $549.99, had a thin launch lineup, and later gained a PC adapter that lets it run SteamVR games. Sony has not announced a successor.

What it means for owners

Nothing changes for current PS VR2 owners today: the headset still works with PS5 games from the PlayStation Store and with PC VR through the adapter. For Meta, the patents add to its large XR portfolio as it prepares its $1,299.99 Meta VR Glasses for spring 2027. Anyone deciding between platforms should treat a future Sony headset as uncertain until Sony says otherwise.
