About Meta
Meta Platforms was founded in 2004 as Facebook and took the name Meta in 2021 to reflect its focus on virtual and augmented reality. It is based in Menlo Park, California. It bought Oculus in 2014, and its VR and AR work now sits in a division called Reality Labs. Meta also makes smart glasses with EssilorLuxottica under the Ray-Ban and Oakley brands.
VR hardware
Meta sells the most widely used standalone VR headsets. The Meta Quest 2 (2020) brought wireless VR to a mass audience. The Meta Quest Pro (2022) tested eye and face tracking and pancake lenses at a premium price. Today's lineup is the Meta Quest 3, with pancake lenses and color passthrough, and the lower-cost Meta Quest 3S. In April 2026, Meta raised Quest 3 and 3S prices, citing the cost of memory chips.
Software, games and platform
Quest headsets run Meta Horizon OS and get apps from the Meta Horizon Store, the largest standalone VR store. Meta is also a major developer and publisher. Its studios include Beat Games (Beat Saber), and it funds or publishes many third-party VR games. Quest Link and Air Link let Quest headsets play PC VR games.
