Inside-out tracking

inside out tracking, SLAM tracking, camera-based tracking, markerless tracking(으)로도 알려짐

Inside-out tracking uses cameras and sensors on the headset itself to work out where you are in the room, so no external sensors or base stations need to be set up.

With inside-out tracking, the headset tracks its own position by looking outward at the room. Built-in cameras watch features of your surroundings, such as edges, corners and textures, and combine them with motion sensors to calculate where the headset is and how it is turned. This approach is often described as SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping).

Controllers and hands

The same cameras usually track the controllers too, typically by watching infrared LEDs or patterns on them. Many inside-out headsets also use the cameras for hand tracking and for passthrough video of the room.

Pros and cons

  • Easy setup: nothing to mount on walls, so it suits standalone headsets and travel.
  • Works almost anywhere with reasonable light and some visual detail.
  • Blind spots: controllers held behind your back or very close to the face can briefly lose tracking.
  • Lighting limits: very dark rooms, direct sunlight, or bare walls and mirrors can confuse the cameras.

Almost every current consumer headset uses inside-out tracking, including the Meta Quest 3, the PlayStation VR2 and the Apple Vision Pro. The main alternative is base station tracking.
