Field of view (FOV)

FOV, FoV, horizontal field of view, viewing angle(으)로도 알려짐

Field of view (FOV) is how much of the virtual world you can see at once through a headset, usually given in degrees horizontally, vertically or diagonally.

Field of view, or FOV, describes the angle of the scene a headset shows you at one time. A wider FOV makes the virtual world feel more natural and reduces the "looking through binoculars" or "diving mask" effect, while a narrow FOV makes the black edges around the image more noticeable.

Why numbers are hard to compare

Manufacturers do not measure FOV the same way. Some quote the horizontal angle, some the vertical, and some the diagonal, which always gives the biggest number. The real FOV you see also depends on how close your eyes are to the lenses (eye relief), the shape of your face, the facial interface, and whether you wear glasses. Two people can therefore report different FOV from the same headset.

For example, Meta lists the Meta Quest 3 at 110 degrees horizontal, while the cheaper Meta Quest 3S is listed at 96 degrees horizontal.

The trade-off

A wider FOV spreads the same number of pixels across a larger area, which lowers sharpness measured in pixels per degree. It also requires bigger lenses and more rendering work, so headset makers balance FOV against clarity, size, weight and cost.
