HTC VIVE SteamVR Base Station 2.0

제작 HTC

HTC's SteamVR Base Station 2.0 for Lighthouse tracking. It works with VIVE Pro series, Valve Index, Bigscreen Beyond 2 and other SteamVR 2.0 headsets.

Overview

SteamVR Base Station 2.0 is the second-generation Lighthouse base station. HTC sells it as the HTC VIVE SteamVR Base Station 2.0, with one base station and one power adapter per order. HTC's US store lists it at $229. The base station beams signals to the headset, controllers and trackers, which use them to work out their exact position. This method is called base station tracking.

Design and specs

Each unit has a 150-degree horizontal and 110-degree vertical field of view, a status light, a threaded mounting hole and a 2.5 m power cord. Base stations sync wirelessly, so no sync cable runs between them. Two base stations cover up to 5 x 5 m. Up to four can be used in one room for up to 10 x 10 m. You set channels and update firmware in SteamVR, over Bluetooth or a cable.

Compatibility

HTC lists the VIVE Pro series and VIVE Cosmos Elite. The Cosmos Elite needs the VIVE Controller (2018). The HTC VIVE Pro 2 spec sheet says it works with both 1.0 and 2.0 base stations. Other makers confirm 2.0 support for Valve Index, Bigscreen Beyond 2 and Beyond 2e, and the Shiftall MeganeX superlight 8K. HTC states it does not work with the original VIVE Controller (1.0), VIVE Tracker (1.0) or VIVE Cosmos controllers. Base Station 1.0 and 2.0 units use different sync methods and cannot be mixed in one play area.

Setup and use

HTC recommends mounting two base stations diagonally at opposite corners of the room. Place them above head height, ideally more than 2 m up, and angle them down 25 to 35 degrees. They should sit at least 0.5 m high, and tracked devices should stay at least 0.5 m away. Tripods, light stands or a stable shelf also work. Avoid bright light, and do not move the base stations after room setup, or you will need to set up the play area again. The minimum play area is 2 x 1.5 m.

Who it is for

It is for owners of SteamVR Lighthouse headsets who need a first, replacement or extra base station, or who want to grow to a four-station setup. Lighthouse-only headsets such as Bigscreen Beyond 2 ship without base stations, so buyers need at least one. Inside-out headsets such as Meta Quest 3 do not use it for headset tracking.
