Real VR Fishing's October Update Lets Quest Players Fish Around Their Real TV in Mixed Reality

Devs United Games has turned mixed-reality fishing into a permanent mode in Real VR Fishing with its October 13 update, according to the studio's developer post on the Meta Horizon Store and UploadVR. A developer on the game later explained on Reddit that the mode uses a room scan, so players can keep their real TV in view while the water covers the rest of the room.

How MR Fishing works

The studio describes MR Fishing as a separate mode: open a supported map and the ocean spreads across the floor of your room. In an October 15 post, developer Dustin_DUG said the mixed reality mode started as a holiday test last year and proved popular enough to keep. The new step is room scanning: you pick which scanned parts become the fishing spot, and everything else stays as your real room.

  • Setup: the developer points Quest 3 and Quest 3S owners to Space Setup, under Settings and Environment Setup (sometimes listed as Physical Space).
  • Ice fishing: an early version turns the room floor into ice. It is reached by selecting Passport on the World Map, and players cannot cut their own hole yet.
  • Multiplayer: other anglers appear as if they are in your room.
  • Video: the game's built-in browser plays Prime Video and Disney+, but not Netflix for now.

The mode is part of the base game, with no DLC needed, and the developer says Horizon+ subscribers can try it. Asked about other platforms, the developer replied that the feature is "currently only available on Meta Quest." UploadVR reported that the update itself also came to SteamVR.

The rest of the update

The October 13 update also added hand tracking with a built-in tutorial, five Halloween maps (three new and two returning), five new fish and free Pumpkin costume rewards. A free Clear Creek Park stage with two new fish marks the game's seventh anniversary. The studio also moved two Halloween sharks planned for October 20 into the same update, as MIXED noted.

What's next

Real VR Fishing lists at $19.99 on Quest. Its next paid DLC, Great Lakes & Oceans, arrives on Quest on November 10 for $12.99 with 10 new locations and 30 new species, including freshwater "monster" fish, the studio says. UploadVR reports a SteamVR release on November 11.
