Codemasters' demanding off-road rally sim with over 50 cars, six real-world rally locations and a team-building career, playable in VR on PC through SteamVR.
DiRT Rally 2.0 is a rally racing simulator from British studio Codemasters, now part of Electronic Arts. It launched on February 25, 2019, and VR support arrived on PC in a free update, version 1.7, in August 2019. The game is still sold on Steam today.
How it plays
You drive stages against the clock on loose gravel, mud and tarmac across six real-life rally locations: New Zealand, Argentina, Spain, Poland, Australia and the USA. More than 50 rally cars are included, such as the VW Polo GTI R5, Citroen C3 R5 and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X. Surfaces wear down as you drive, tire choice matters, and you can tune each car's setup and upgrade parts.
The single-player career lets you build your own team, hire staff and grow your garage through events and championships. Daily, weekly and monthly challenges have worldwide leaderboards, and Time Trial and Quick Play multiplayer remain available. Racenet Clubs, its community championship feature, stopped working on July 8, 2026.
Comfort
Rally driving means constant bumps, slides and fast direction changes while you sit still, which can cause motion sickness in VR. Players new to VR racing should start with short sessions. Steam does not publish a comfort rating.
Platforms and what to know before buying
- VR works only on PC. You need a gaming PC and a PC VR headset; Steam lists support for SteamVR and the Oculus PC runtime. When VR launched, the Steam listing named the Valve Index and HTC Vive.
- The price on Steam is $19.99, or $39.99 for the Game of the Year Edition, which adds all season content and the Colin McRae: FLAT OUT Pack with routes in Scotland.
- A racing wheel and pedals are recommended for the best experience, as coverage of the VR launch pointed out, though a gamepad also works.
- The PlayStation and Xbox versions have no VR mode, and Codemasters ruled out PlayStation VR support.
- Minimum PC specs on Steam are 64-bit Windows, an AMD FX4300 or Intel Core i3 2130, 8 GB of RAM, an AMD HD7750 or NVIDIA GTX650Ti, and 100 GB of storage. These are for flat-screen play; VR asks more of the graphics card.
