For VR and AR fans, the main draw is the SXSW XR Experience, the festival's immersive exhibition within SXSW Film & TV. It is confirmed for 2027: the official exhibitions page lists "XR Experience | Fairmont Manchester | March 17-19". SXSW also took XR Experience applications for SXSW 2027, and they closed on October 1, 2026. The 2027 selection has not been announced yet. According to SXSW, the programme covers:
- XR Experience Competition: world premieres of immersive work
- XR Experience Spotlight: acclaimed immersive projects from around the world
- XR Experience Special Events
- More than 40 projects across VR, AR, mixed reality, location-based experiences and AI storytelling, a figure taken from SXSW's current Film & TV page
SXSW's exhibitions page also cites 30 accepted XR projects and 7,000 XR Experience participants. The SXSW Expo (Fairmont Congressional, March 15 to 18) and Flatstock run during the same week. The festival is for creators, studios, technologists and fans. Access to the XR Experience is via SXSW badges, and 2027 badges are on sale now on sxsw.com.
