Base station tracking
Lighthouse, SteamVR Tracking, outside-in tracking, base stations के नाम से भी जाना जाता है
Base station tracking is an outside-in system where small boxes placed around the room sweep infrared light, and sensors on the headset and controllers use it to find their exact position.
Base station tracking is the best-known form of outside-in tracking in consumer VR. It is most closely tied to Valve's SteamVR Tracking system, often called Lighthouse. Two or more base stations are mounted high in the corners of the play area. They do not contain cameras; instead they sweep beams of infrared light across the room. Photodiode sensors on the headset, controllers and trackers detect the timing of those sweeps and use it to calculate their position and rotation.
Strengths
- Very precise, low-latency tracking with a large tracked volume.
- Controllers stay tracked behind your back or outside the headset's view, which helps in fast games.
- Works with add-on trackers for feet, hips and props, which is popular for full-body tracking.
Weaknesses
- Extra hardware to buy, mount and power.
- Less portable, and the play area is tied to where the stations are placed.
- Reflective surfaces such as mirrors can cause tracking glitches.
Headsets that use it
The Valve Index and the Bigscreen Beyond 2 rely on base stations. Most newer headsets have moved to inside-out tracking.
