After the Fall is a four-player cooperative first-person shooter developed and published by Vertigo Games, the studio behind the Arizona Sunshine series. Released in December 2021 and updated with full cross-platform play across Meta Quest, Sony PlayStation VR2, SteamVR, and PICO, it drops squads into an alternate-history 1980s Los Angeles buried beneath a catastrophic new ice age.
How it plays
Twenty years after a designer plague froze the planet and mutated survivors intoferocious undead creatures known as "Snowbreed," players step into the boots of Harvest Runners venturing out from an underground metro hub. Using physical two-handed weapon handling, manual magazine reloading, and wrist-mounted rocket launchers engineered from 1980s cassette players and arcade parts, teams of four fight through blizzards, frozen skyscrapers, and ice-caked highways to scavenge Harvest and floppy disks containing weapon blueprints.
Content and Game Modes
- 32-player social hub ("The Line"): Before launching a mission, up to 32 players from all VR platforms can meet in a shared 1980s arcade bunker to form four-player squads, test weapons in the firing range, and trade gear.
- Harvest Runs & Mutator difficulties: Ten campaign missions feature randomized enemy spawns, mid-level safe rooms, and towering bosses like the Smasher and Juggernaut across four base difficulties plus Endgame Mutator runs.
- Horde Mode & Tundradome PvP: Defend snowbound intersections against endless waves of Snowbreed or compete in 4v4 team deathmatches.
Multiplayer and Cross-Play
Full four-player cross-play is built in from the ground up using a cross-platform friend code system, allowing Quest 3, Quest 3S, PS VR2, and PC VR players to squad up seamlessly. If fewer than four humans are in the party, AI bots fill the remaining slots.
Comfort
With fast-paced hordes, sprinting, and boss arenas, After the Fall is rated "Moderate" to "Intense," though it includes full support for teleportation movement, comfort vignettes, and seated or standing play.
