OpenXR

Également appelé Open XR, Khronos OpenXR, OpenXR runtime

OpenXR is a royalty-free open standard from the Khronos Group that gives VR and AR apps one common way to talk to headsets, so developers can support many devices with less work.

OpenXR is an application programming interface (API) standard maintained by the Khronos Group, the industry consortium also behind Vulkan and OpenGL. It defines a common language between an XR app and the "runtime" that drives a headset, covering things like rendering to the displays, reading head and controller poses, and handling input.

Why it exists

In VR's early consumer years each platform had its own API, so developers had to build and maintain separate versions of their apps. OpenXR replaces that patchwork. An app written for OpenXR can, in principle, run on any headset whose runtime supports the standard, with vendor-specific features added through optional extensions.

Versions

OpenXR 1.0 was released in July 2019. OpenXR 1.1, released in April 2024, folded several widely used extensions into the core standard, including support for foveated rendering and a floor-level reference space.

Who supports it

OpenXR is supported by most major platforms and engines, including Meta's Quest runtime, SteamVR, PICO, HTC and Android XR, as well as Unity, Unreal Engine and Godot. For players the benefit is mostly invisible: more games work across more headsets.
