Plataforma
Android XR
Google's operating system for headsets and glasses, built with Samsung and Qualcomm. Apps come from Google Play, including XR apps and most Android phone and tablet apps.
What it is
Android XR is Google's version of Android for extended reality devices. Google announced it in December 2024, developed with Samsung and Qualcomm, and it launched in October 2025. It brings the Android app ecosystem into a headset. You can place app windows around your room, switch to fully immersive content, and use Gemini as a built-in assistant that understands what you are looking at.
Headsets that use it
The first device on the platform is the Samsung Galaxy XR. Google has said Android XR will also come to glasses from partner brands.
Buying and installing
Apps come from Google Play, using the same Google account and payment methods as on an Android phone. Play offers apps and games built for XR, plus a large set of standard Android phone and tablet apps that run in floating windows without changes. Google's own apps, including YouTube, Maps, Photos and Chrome, have versions adapted for the headset.
Notable traits
Because it is based on Android, developers can bring existing apps over and build XR apps with familiar tools, including the OpenXR standard, Unity and web technologies. Chrome supports WebXR, so browser-based VR and AR experiences also run. Input works with eye tracking and hand gestures, or with optional controllers for games.
