Software
SteamVR
También conocido como Steam VR, OpenVR, Chaperone
SteamVR is Valve's free software for playing VR on a Windows PC: it runs the headset, provides the home space and settings, and lets you launch VR games bought on Steam.
SteamVR is the VR layer of Valve's Steam platform. It is installed through Steam on a PC and acts as the runtime between your headset and the games you play. When you launch a VR game from your Steam library, SteamVR starts, tracks your headset and controllers, and shows its own home environment and dashboard.
What it does
- Runs many headsets: native SteamVR headsets like the Valve Index and the Bigscreen Beyond 2, plus others through bridges, such as Meta Quest via Link or Steam Link and the PlayStation VR2 through its PC adapter.
- Room setup: it includes its own play-area tool, called Chaperone, which shows a grid when you approach the edge.
- Settings: per-game render resolution, refresh rate, controller bindings and Motion Smoothing.
- Standards: it supports OpenXR as well as Valve's older OpenVR API.
SteamVR and the Steam store
People often use "SteamVR" to mean both the software and the VR section of the Steam store, which is the largest catalog of PC VR games. For the store side, see the SteamVR platform page.
