Meta Quest Sales Fall as Q3 VR Strategy Shifts

Meta Quest sales fell in Q3 2026, reducing Reality Labs revenue to $443 million as Meta changed its approach to new VR hardware. Meta reported its third-quarter results on October 21.

According to the earnings call transcript, CFO Susan Li said Reality Labs revenue declined 6% year over year because of lower Quest headset sales. Strong growth in AI glasses partly offset the decline.

Update (2026-10-31): VR.org News reported that Reality Labs operating loss was $4.13 billion in Q3 2026, $303 million lower than a year earlier. The outlet also reported that Quest 3 uses a Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip with 8GB of memory, the same performance platform as Quest 3S. In September, Meta's v207 SDK added a Meta VR Glasses profile to Meta XR Simulator. VR.org News reported that Meta VR Glasses have a field of view of about 70 by 66 degrees, compared with 110 by 96 degrees on Quest 3, and ship without controllers. Existing Quest apps should run on Meta VR Glasses at parity or better than Quest 3.

Meta changes its VR hardware approach

Mark Zuckerberg said Meta is “changing our approach to virtual reality to only ship new devices when we have major breakthroughs.” Meta will pace VR spending so it can focus first on what it calls personal superintelligence. As Road to VR notes, Meta did not define what qualifies as a breakthrough.

The next announced device is Meta VR Glasses, a $1,299.99 lightweight headset with a separate compute puck. It is due in spring 2027. Meta has not announced a successor to Quest 3 or Quest 3S.

What current owners and buyers should expect

For now, Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S remain Meta's current headsets, and developers will keep targeting them. Quest 3 uses a Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip with 8GB of memory, matching Quest 3S's performance platform.

Anyone waiting for a “Quest 4” before buying should expect a long wait with no official timeline. Meta says every Quest game will also be playable on Meta VR Glasses with Touch Plus controllers. A Meta Horizon Store library bought today should carry forward.

The hardware gap matters for buyers comparing current and upcoming devices. Meta VR Glasses are due in spring 2027, use a separate compute puck, have a narrower field of view than Quest 3, and ship without controllers. Their app compatibility is expected to match or exceed Quest 3, while Meta's current headset line remains Quest 3 and Quest 3S.
