XSOverlay is a desktop overlay for SteamVR made by the independent developer Xiexe. It lets you see and use your Windows desktop, or single app windows, without leaving VR, which has made it a popular productivity tool for PC VR users and VRChat players. It entered Early Access on Steam on March 3, 2020, and is still listed as Early Access today.
What it does
XSOverlay shows windows as floating panels on top of whatever SteamVR game or app you are running. You can capture a whole monitor or one window, move and scale panels at any distance, curve them, pin them in place or attach them to a controller, and save layouts for later. You click with your controllers, including long presses and dragging, and type on a virtual keyboard that detects your system's keyboard layout and can play custom typing sounds.
A wrist panel on your non-dominant hand shows the time, controller and tracker battery levels, CPU and GPU load, and media controls for apps such as Spotify. Other programs can send pop-up notifications to the headset through its API, and the overlay can pass data such as battery levels to VRChat avatars over OSC. Discord Rich Presence is built in.
Comfort
XSOverlay adds no movement of its own; it sits on top of the game or app you are already using, so comfort depends on that title. Steam lists it as VR only, with tracked controller support.
Platforms and what to know before buying
- It is sold only on Steam, for $9.99, and needs SteamVR. It works with SteamVR headsets such as the Valve Index, and Quest owners can use it when they play PC VR through SteamVR.
- Only Windows 10 and 11 are officially supported. The minimum specs list an Intel i5-4590 or AMD FX 8350, a GeForce GTX 970 or Radeon R9 290 and 500 MB of storage.
- The interface is available in 20 languages, including English, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, German, French and Spanish.
- Steam reviews are Very Positive overall, with 85% of about 1,400 reviews recommending it. Steam notes that the last developer update was more than a year ago.
- Builds before 647 had a critical security flaw (CVE-2024-23168) that let websites reach the overlay's local WebSocket API, so keep the app up to date.
