Half-Life: Alyx received optional foveated rendering on PC in Valve's October 26, 2026 update. The feature arrives more than six years after the game launched in March 2020. It first appeared in September with the native port for Valve's standalone Steam Frame.
How foveated rendering works
Foveated rendering keeps full detail in the area you look at and reduces detail toward the lens edges. In Alyx, each frame uses full resolution in its center, quarter resolution in a middle band and one-sixteenth resolution in an outer ring. Four presets—low, medium, high and ultra—control the width of those regions.
Valve says the setting can increase rendering performance and recommends eye tracking for best results. Eye tracking is optional, but the headset's SteamVR driver must expose it for the sharp zone to follow your gaze. Without eye tracking, each preset steps down one level, leaving a larger sharp center that remains centered.
VR.org News reports that Valve's setup guide covers eye tracking across 13 headset families: Steam Frame, Meta, Sony, Apple, Samsung, HTC, Pico, Bigscreen, HP, Pimax, Varjo, Play For Dream and Somnium headsets. The guide is authored by mbucchia, identified as Matthieu Bucchianeri; his GitHub profile lists Valve as his employer.
GPU and menu requirements
- Foveated rendering is under Advanced Performance and is off by default.
- Supported GPUs include Nvidia GTX 16-series and RTX 20-series or newer, AMD RX 6000-series or newer, and Intel Arc A-series or newer.
- On Direct3D 11, the feature works only on Nvidia cards.
- AMD and Intel users need to launch the game with the -vulkan option.
VR.org News reports that Alyx's dynamic resolution scaling may absorb the GPU headroom freed by foveated rendering. As a result, the setting may not always increase frame rate, even when it reduces rendering work.
Steam Frame and patch fixes
When Alyx runs natively on Steam Frame, the update enables stencil buffer tagging. This should improve reprojection quality. The patch also fixes several rendering crashes common in Workshop content and an issue that prevented the "Gnome Alone" achievement from unlocking.
What PC VR players should expect
Players with eye-tracked PC headsets can use gaze-following foveation to reduce rendering demand. That headroom may support higher resolution or steadier frame rates, but dynamic resolution scaling can limit any visible frame-rate gain. Players without eye tracking can still test the lower presets with a larger centered sharp zone.
Half-Life: Alyx is available on SteamVR. The October update makes foveated rendering available to PC VR players with supported graphics cards, while Steam Frame receives its separate reprojection-related change.
