A modder who goes by rockonthehill has shown a work-in-progress PC VR mod that runs the entire single-player campaign of Gears of War: E-Day, according to Road to VR and MIXED. The trailer went up on the modder's YouTube channel on October 18, twelve days after the game's worldwide launch on October 6. There is nothing to download yet.
What the early build does
The trailer's description lists the features already working:
- Stereo rendering and full-body IK, so the player sees a proper 3D view and a body that follows their movements.
- Manual reloads and weapon switching, plus two-handed aiming.
- Fighting from cover across the campaign.
- The King Raven gunner seat, the helicopter turret sections.
A first changelog, posted on the modder's Ko-fi page and under the trailer, adds a Lancer chainsaw that is started with its lever and cuts without a canned animation, physical melee, hand and weapon collision, a working Longshot scope, and gun-specific reloads such as loading the Gnasher shell by shell. A short chainsaw preview followed on Ko-fi on October 22, and the rest is due in the next gameplay video.
Free, unofficial and campaign-only
The modder says the finished mod will be free, and that Ko-fi tips "do not give early access or any exclusive content." Players will still need to own the game. The video description says the mod was made under Microsoft's Game Content Usage Rules and is not endorsed by or affiliated with Microsoft, so it is a fan project, not an official VR mode from The Coalition.
It is meant for single-player only. In replies under the trailer, rockonthehill says the modded game will start in offline mode so players cannot join multiplayer and risk a ban. Road to VR expects the mod to be a fork of praydog's UEVR injector for Unreal Engine games, but the modder has not said which tools it uses.
What is still unknown
There is no release date and no published PC requirements. The modder says the build is developed on a Pimax Dream Air SE with an RTX 5080 graphics card, and promises tips for higher frame rates at release. The Xbox app and Game Pass version of the game has not been tested yet, though the modder expects it to work. Until a release is announced on the modder's YouTube, X or Ko-fi pages, any download claiming to be this mod should be treated as fake.
