An AI-written assessment of Metro Awakening from official game details and published reviews: thick atmosphere, tactile weapons and survival chores, and good versions on every platform, but a repetitive second half, limited level variety, muddled storytelling and clumsy stealth.

평결

Metro Awakening captures the Metro series well in VR, with dense atmosphere, satisfying improvised weapons and physical survival mechanics. A padded, repetitive second half, little variety in its tunnels and uneven storytelling keep it short of the top tier.

This review is an AI-written assessment. It is based on official game details and on what published reviews broadly agree on, not on hands-on play.

What it is

Metro Awakening is a single-player, story-driven shooter from Vertigo Games, the studio behind Arizona Sunshine. It is a VR-only prequel to Metro 2033, written by Metro creator Dmitry Glukhovsky. You play Serdar, a doctor searching the Moscow Metro for his wife and the medication she needs, in a mix of exploration, stealth and combat. MIXED counted twelve chapters.

It launched on November 7, 2024 on Quest, PC VR and PlayStation VR2, priced at $50 according to Road to VR. The Meta Horizon Store version includes cross-buy with Rift, and it is also on SteamVR and the PlayStation Store. Road to VR took 7.5 hours to finish it on medium difficulty, and MIXED estimated seven to nine hours.

The game leans on physical survival chores. You wear a gas mask and swap filters, hand-crank a charger to power fuse boxes, and pull your backpack off your shoulder to manage gear. Weapons are improvised Metro guns with tactile reloading. It offers a full set of comfort settings, including teleport and smooth movement, snap and smooth turning, blinders and a seated mode.

Strengths

  • Atmosphere. This is the point every review agrees on. Road to VR praised its detailed, decrepit environments, and Press Start called it a "capable, haunting jaunt" through the Metro. MIXED called the post-apocalyptic atmosphere excellent.
  • Weapons and interactions. Road to VR gave gameplay a 9 and singled out the weapons and shooting. MIXED praised the convincing weapon handling and gadget interactions, and GamesRadar+ listed good tactile combat and the physicality of interactions as reasons to buy.
  • Presentation on every platform. Road to VR said the standalone and tethered versions both got proper attention, though the PC and PS VR2 versions look significantly better. GamingTrend called the PS VR2 graphics gorgeous. TheSixthAxis, which scored it 9/10, highlighted the PS VR2 headset haptics and spatial audio, especially when spiders crawl around your head.
  • Scares. MIXED noted plenty of frightening moments and well-arranged audio, and found most fights exciting.

Weaknesses

  • Repetitive second half. Road to VR felt a strong first half gave way to a "padded and uninspired second half", hence its "Eventually Monotonic" headline. GamingTrend found it repetitive by the end, and GamesRadar+ said "its impact fades with continued play".
  • Limited variety. MIXED and GamesRadar+ both criticized the lack of variety in levels and locations. MIXED added that there were too few creative puzzles, some backtracking and unfairly spaced save points.
  • Story delivery. GamesRadar+ called the storytelling muddled, Press Start found the twists telegraphed, and GamingTrend felt long story scenes drag in VR.
  • Combat and stealth rough edges. Press Start found the gunfights frustrating and stealth clumsy. Road to VR thought the "shadow" enemies were poorly telegraphed and found knockout punches unsatisfying. MIXED found enemy actions sometimes predictable.
  • Comfort risks. Road to VR warned that cramped tunnels, frequent stairs and some horizon shifts may bother people sensitive to motion sickness. MIXED also flagged the game for anyone with claustrophobia or arachnophobia. At the time of its review, MIXED said a spider-free mode was in the works.

Who it suits

It suits Metro fans and anyone who wants a tense, linear, atmospheric shooter in VR, and you do not need to know the books or earlier games. PC VR and PS VR2 owners get the best-looking version, while Quest players still get a solid port. Players who dislike linear levels, backtracking or giant spiders should be cautious, and so should anyone prone to motion sickness.

How it compares

Against Batman: Arkham Shadow, MIXED said the Quest version performs well but does not reach Batman's visual quality. Metro is the slower, more survival- and horror-focused of the two. Next to Half-Life: Alyx, which needs a PC, Metro Awakening offers a similar mix of tactile shooting and exploration but runs standalone on Quest and on PS VR2. Reviewers, though, found its puzzles and level design thin.

Scores were good rather than great. Road to VR gave it 7.5, GamingTrend 80, Press Start 7/10 and GamesRadar+ 3 out of 5, while TheSixthAxis went to 9/10 and MIXED called it one of the best VR shooters yet, with reservations. On the Meta store it rated 4.5 out of 5 from about 1,800 ratings. The consensus is a convincing slice of Metro that runs out of ideas before the end.
