A first-person stealth game that brings the Thief series to VR: play the thief Magpie, pick locks, pocket loot and use a bow with special arrows to slip through The City.
Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow is a stealth action-adventure developed by Maze Theory and published by Vertigo Games in cooperation with Eidos-Montréal. It was released on December 4, 2025, for Quest, SteamVR and PlayStation VR2. It is the first Thief game made for VR.
Story
The game returns to The City, the dark, steampunk setting of the Thief series. You play Magpie, a young thief orphaned by Baron Northcrest and raised on the streets, who steals to survive and comes across an artifact tied to the series' past.
How it plays
Stealth comes first. You sneak through alleys and over rooftops, pick locks and pockets, and pry open hidden compartments with your hands. A bow carries five arrow types: water arrows put out torches, fire arrows ignite objects, blunt arrows knock guards out, rope arrows create something to climb, and regular arrows can kill or break lights. A blackjack with a parry move covers close calls, and Glyph Vision highlights objectives and secrets. Levels offer several routes, so you can ghost past guards or take them down. Road to VR's review put the campaign at a little over five hours.
Comfort
Meta lists the game as comfortable, and it can be played seated or standing. It uses smooth movement with snap, quick or smooth turning, real or button crouch and adjustable player height. There is no teleport option, so players sensitive to motion may need time to adjust.
