Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes

by Steel Crate Games

Asymmetric cooperative party game where one player in VR defuses a procedural ticking bomb while friends in the room read instructions from the Bomb Defusal Manual.

Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes is an asymmetric cooperative puzzle and party game developed by Ottawa studio Steel Crate Games. Originally created for virtual reality headsets and released in October 2015, it remains one of the best local couch-co-op VR games because only one person needs to wear a headset while everyone else in the room participates using a printed or digital Bomb Defusal Manual.

How it plays

One player puts on the VR headset and is trapped alone in a room with a ticking time bomb covered in procedural modules—wires, keypads, Morse code lights, mazes, and memory buttons. None of the other players ("The Experts") are allowed to look at the headset screen. Instead, they must consult the free Bomb Defusal Manual at bombmanual.com on their phones, tablets, or printed sheets and talk the VR player through disengaging every module before the countdown timer reaches zero.

Content and Replayability

  • Procedurally generated bombs: Every round shuffles the modules, wire combinations, serial numbers, and indicator lights, ensuring no two bombs are ever solved the same way.
  • Escalating campaign tiers: Missions progress from simple three-module training bombs to frantic multi-sided devices with needy modules that require constant attention and distractions like alarms or power blackouts in the room.
  • Freeplay mode: Players can set custom timers, module counts, and hardcore rules for party tournaments.

Multiplayer and Party Setup

Because the Experts only need the manual, Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes works both in the same living room—passing the VR headset from person to person after each explosion or successful defusal—and remotely over Discord or voice chat. It accommodates two players up to a whole room of friends dividing up different pages of the manual.

Comfort and Accessibility

The VR player remains completely stationary at a desk inspecting the bomb, earning a "Comfortable" rating with zero artificial locomotion or motion sickness. Players can use either tracked motion controllers or hand tracking on supported headsets.

What to know before buying

The game costs $14.99 on the Meta Horizon Store and SteamVR, and only the host needs to own the game; the Bomb Defusal Manual is free to download or view in dozens of languages.
