Snap Specs are Snap's first consumer AR glasses, with Robert Downey Jr. joining their team as honorary Chief Customer Experience Officer. Snap announced the appointment in late October 2026, as Road to VR reported on October 21.
What Downey's role involves
The title is honorary, but Snap describes active involvement. Downey is set to work across parts of the Specs organization, exploring new features, shaping Lens experiences and developing original content. He will also collaborate on hardware and in-person experiences.
The first output is a series of short videos showing Downey trying the glasses' capabilities. The videos were published on the official Specs website and on YouTube, with more episodes planned.
Update (2026-11-01): VR.org News reported that Downey Jr.'s SPECS partnership debuted during the NBA Tip-Off game between the New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers on NBC. The outlet also reported that an original SPECS episode debuted during Game 1 of the World Series on October 23, 2026. The short films show Downey Jr. using SPECS for workspace improvement, golf, watching a show and developing an artistic skill.
Snap Specs price and launch details
- Price: Snap Specs start at $2,195. A bundle with an optional cellular charging case costs $2,395.
- Markets: The planned markets are the US, the UK and France.
- Timing: Specs are expected to ship this fall. Pre-orders require a refundable deposit, with the balance due when the order is completed.
- Type: Specs are see-through AR glasses that run Snap's Lenses, rather than a fully enclosed VR headset.
Snap's Specs page lists Downey under his new title. It still gives no exact shipping date and says buyers will be contacted closer to the shipping window.
How Specs compare
The appointment adds a celebrity marketing push to a product entering a competitive market. Meta sells camera-equipped Ray-Ban glasses and announced its $1,299.99 Meta VR Glasses for spring 2027. XREAL has priced its Android XR-based Aura glasses from $1,279.
At $2,195, Specs cost more than both alternatives. Snap therefore needs to show clear everyday uses for its glasses. Downey's short films cover workspace improvement, golf, watching a show and developing an artistic skill, giving the partnership a practical content angle.
For anyone considering a pre-order, the key facts are the starting price, the three launch countries and the refundable deposit. Real-world comfort, battery life and how well the displays hold up outdoors remain unknown until the glasses ship and independent reviews arrive.
