BRINK XR

Small San Francisco-based studio that scans real places with photogrammetry and LiDAR and turns them into walkable VR scenes, best known for the virtual travel app BRINK Traveler.

BRINK XR is a small independent studio that captures real-world landscapes with photogrammetry and LiDAR scanning and rebuilds them as photorealistic 3D scenes for VR headsets. Its company site lists San Francisco as its base, and Meta has described the team as working remotely between California and Bordeaux, France.

The studio was co-founded by Akin Bilgic, Brandon Riza and Florian Bernard. Bilgic previously worked at Oculus Story Studio, the VR film team that Oculus closed in 2017, and went on to develop the idea that became the studio's main product.

Notable work

  • BRINK Traveler, a virtual travel app that launched on Quest and Steam on September 9, 2021, and now includes 58 scanned locations such as the Dolomites, Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon.
  • The app has since come to the PICO Store and Android XR, and the studio says it has passed 500,000 downloads across stores.
  • In August 2024, BRINK XR announced a partnership with Novobeing to bring its nature scenes to VR therapy programs for hospital patients.

The studio says 1% of every BRINK Traveler sale goes to environmental charity partners.
