Nature Treks VR is a calm nature experience from Greener Games, the studio of creator John Carline, and a natural fit for the Travel & Exploration category. It has no goals, timers or scores: you wander through peaceful places and reshape them as you go. It launched on Steam on May 4, 2017, and the studio describes it as an original Meta Quest launch title. Greener Games says it has sold more than 300,000 copies.

What it does

The app offers 15 color-themed worlds, ranging from tropical beaches and ocean depths to forests, mountains and outer space. Each world is designed to evoke a particular mood, and some scenery reacts to the music. You can also switch the music off and listen only to the sounds of nature.

Dozens of animal species live in these worlds, from elephants and deer to whales and dolphins. Creator orbs let you grow trees and plants, change the weather and shift the time of day, so you can stargaze at night or relax in the sun. The Quest version adds a Meditation Lotus and ambient soundscapes for mindfulness, and you can attract birds and butterflies by holding out a branch. The developer adds content through free updates; the latest named update, Animal Kingdom, brought more wildlife to the tropical, underwater and space areas.

Comfort

The pace is slow and there is nothing to chase, which keeps the experience gentle. You can move by teleporting or with free movement, and the Steam version also lists snap rotation and an arm-swinging mode. Teleporting is usually the more comfortable choice for people prone to motion sickness. Neither store shows an official comfort rating.

Platforms and what to know before buying

  • It costs $9.99 on the Meta Horizon Store for Quest headsets and $9.99 on Steam for SteamVR and Oculus PC headsets.
  • The PC version is VR-only and needs tracked motion controllers. Steam lists an Intel i7 processor, an NVIDIA GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon RX 480 graphics card and about 1.2 GB of storage, and Steam itself now requires Windows 10 or later.
  • Steam lists it as single-player, with an English interface.
  • It is rated 3+ on the Meta Horizon Store.
  • Arcades and VR centers can license it through SpringboardVR.
  • Nature Treks: Together, a separate multiplayer title from the same studio, is sold on its own in Early Access on Steam.
