Bonelab review: a brilliant physics sandbox wrapped around a thin game
An AI-written assessment of Bonelab from official game details and published reviews: immersive full-body physics, inventive avatar swapping, plenty of sandbox modes and strong mod support; a short, confusing campaign, frustrating climbing, weak enemies, Quest visual compromises and very demanding comfort.
Das Fazit
Bonelab is an impressive physics playground with inventive avatar swapping and a long life thanks to mods. Reviewers agree its campaign, enemies and comfort fall short, so it best suits experienced VR players who want a sandbox rather than a story.

This review is an AI-written assessment. It is based on official game details and on what published reviews broadly agree on, not on hands-on play.
What it is
Bonelab is a physics-driven action sandbox from Stress Level Zero, the studio behind the PC VR game Boneworks. It launched on September 29, 2022 on Meta Quest 2 and PC VR, after a surprise release-date reveal only six days earlier. It was the first mainline game in the series to run standalone on Quest. MIXED listed it at $39.99 on Meta Quest, Oculus Rift and Steam, with no cross-buy between stores.
Everything in the world is simulated, including your own full body. Guns, melee weapons and objects have weight, and climbing, vaulting and fighting all run through the physics engine. The headline new idea is avatar swapping: you switch between bodies of different sizes and strengths to solve puzzles and fights. Around a short campaign sit arenas, obstacle courses, sandbox maps and experimental modes, plus support for custom avatars and user-made levels from day one.
The game sold quickly. Road to VR reported that it made $1 million in less than an hour on Quest, a record for the platform at the time. Support has continued since launch: in June 2024 MIXED covered Patch 4, which brought 4x anisotropic filtering, better rendering and a much larger texture cache for Meta Quest 3, along with load time and memory improvements on every platform.
Strengths
- Physics immersion. Road to VR scored immersion 8/10 and called the interactive world "refreshingly immersive". UploadVR found that "the more creative you are" with the systems, the more fun it becomes.
- Avatar swapping. MIXED said the body swap produced the game's most entertaining moments, and Road to VR praised how the bodies feel physically distinct.
- Sandbox and modes. UploadVR called the sandbox content "quite extensive", with minigames, wave shooters and parkour courses.
- Mods. Day-one mod support is the long-term draw. In May 2024 Road to VR reported that a free fan mod, Labworks, made the whole Boneworks campaign playable inside Bonelab, including on Quest.
- A capable Quest port. Road to VR praised the Quest 2 optimisation, and MIXED called it remarkable that the full physics engine runs on standalone hardware.
Weaknesses
- Thin campaign. UploadVR felt the six-to-seven-hour campaign verged on "an afterthought", and MIXED found the story "somewhat jumbled". The avatar swap, MIXED noted, arrives far too late in story mode.
- Fiddly physics. Road to VR called climbing "usually a frustrating nightmare", and UploadVR found ladders and ledges harder than they need to be. Road to VR also disliked the holster system.
- Weak enemies and design. Road to VR criticised boring enemies with little variety, bland weapons and poor encounter and puzzle design, and gave gameplay 5/10. MIXED found the AI so inattentive that guns were often unnecessary.
- Quest visuals and stability. UploadVR saw stutters, frame drops, crashes and heavy fog on Quest 2. MIXED noted missing shadows, weaker lighting and less detailed textures compared with PC. Later patches improved the Quest 3 version.
- Comfort. Both MIXED and Road to VR warned about few comfort options alongside launches, vehicles, falls and rollercoaster sections. Road to VR scored comfort 5/10.
Who it suits
It suits experienced VR players with a strong stomach who enjoy experimenting with physics, and players who want a platform for mods rather than a finished story. It is a poor first VR game: UploadVR recommended it only for players who are already comfortable in VR, and MIXED told beginners and people prone to motion sickness to think twice. Quest 3 owners get a noticeably better standalone version than Quest 2 owners did at launch.
How it compares
Against Half-Life: Alyx, Bonelab has a much looser structure and weaker storytelling, but more freedom to break things and far more user-made content; Alyx also requires a PC. Blade & Sorcery is the closest match, another physics sandbox built around mods, with a stronger focus on melee combat where Bonelab leans on guns and avatar puzzles. Against its predecessor, Road to VR noted that Boneworks took around nine hours to finish, nearly double Bonelab's campaign, which the Labworks mod now makes available to Bonelab players.
Critics were divided. Road to VR gave it 5/10, MIXED called the overall package disappointing, and UploadVR recommended it with clear warnings. The common view is that the physics and sandbox are impressive, while the campaign, enemies and comfort are not.
