WebXR

The open web standard that lets VR and AR experiences run in a headset's browser from a link, with nothing to install, supported on Quest, PICO, Android XR and Vision Pro.

TypWeb

What it is

WebXR is a web standard, developed through the W3C, that lets websites show immersive VR and AR content. A WebXR experience is a web page. You open a link in the headset's browser, tap a button to enter VR or mixed reality, and the page takes over the view and reads head and controller or hand tracking. There is no company store behind it. Developers publish on their own sites, often with libraries such as three.js, Babylon.js or A-Frame.

Headsets that use it

WebXR works in the built-in browsers of most standalone headsets. These include the Meta Quest Browser on Meta Quest 3, Meta Quest 3S, Meta Quest Pro and Meta Quest 2; the browser on PICO 4 Ultra; Chrome on the Samsung Galaxy XR; and Safari on Apple Vision Pro (M5) and the original Apple Vision Pro. On a PC, Chromium-based browsers can show WebXR on connected PC VR headsets.

Using it

There is nothing to buy or install. You visit a URL, and the experience loads like any website. Some sites can be saved as web apps. Paid WebXR projects handle payment on their own websites.

Notable traits

WebXR is good for quick demos, education, product viewers, art and small games that anyone can open from a shared link on almost any headset. Feature support differs by browser. Vision Pro's Safari, for example, centers on hand and eye input, and very demanding games still run better as native apps.
