The Sundance Film Festival, run by the Sundance Institute, moves from Park City, Utah to Boulder, Colorado for its 2027 edition. The festival runs from January 21 to 31, 2027. World premieres run from January 21 to 26, and at-home online screenings of the competition sections run from January 28 to 31. Venues are within about two miles of each other and include Macky Auditorium on the CU Boulder campus, Chautauqua Auditorium, the Dairy Arts Center and Cinemark Century, which hosts press and industry screenings.
For XR audiences, the key news is New Frontier, Sundance's programme at the intersection of art, cinematic storytelling and emerging technologies. It has historically been the festival's home for VR and immersive work. In its official 2027 guide, Sundance confirms that New Frontier returns after a two-year pause. Sundance also says the Dairy Arts Center will be a screening venue and the primary home of New Frontier in 2027.
- New Frontier is officially confirmed for 2027, but its lineup and format (for example, whether it includes VR headset works) have not been announced yet
- Sundance says the full 2027 lineup will be announced in December 2026
- Jury and audience awards are announced on January 29, 2027
The festival is for filmmakers, industry, press and the public. Passes and packages go on sale ahead of the festival, with single tickets in early January. Sundance Institute members get early access.
